Mars Lord. Making Birth Better

Mars Lord.

Making Birth Better.

Do you want calm, knowledgeable reassurance?

You are pregnant and happy. You want privacy in a public world. You want to enjoy this time and hold some of it to yourself.  You want to strike your own path and you want a guide to walk beside you.

We might be the perfect fit for each other if:

• you want someone to protect your space

• you want a listening ear

• you want to explore your options

• you want to dance to the beat of your own drum

• you want quality knowledgeable care

My name is Mars Lord and I am passionate about birth and about women having and making informed choices.  I became a doula because I believe that birth is a wonderful thing and can be a wonderful time. As a mother of 5 (including twins) I know that even when it doesn’t seem to go the way that we want it to, it can still be an incredible experience.  It should be your incredible experience.

I offer the following services:

Birth Preparation

With so much to think about now that you’re pregnant, would you like to be as excited about your birth as you are about your baby?

As your doula, I can offer you

  • Calm and positive support during pregnancy, birth, and early parenting.
  • Someone to listen and acknowledge your needs and wishes, your worries and dreams.
  • Someone to help you feel good about your birth, however it may happen.

If this is what you want, then I will visit you and your partner at home and we can talk through how you can prepare yourself for the birth of your baby and let your excitement build.

We can talk about

  • Encouraging your baby into optimum position for labour and birth
  • Protecting your birth environment
  • Exploring your birth choices
  • Protecting your space when baby is born
  • Establishing feeding
  • What happens once baby is here

Why should you do this?

As a doula I have seen many births and what brings me the greatest joy is knowing that women feel supported, listened to and cared for.  It makes all the difference when looking back on the birth journey.

Post Natal Care

You’re home. The door is closed to the world. Suddenly you’re in charge of a new life and you’re not sure what comes next.

Do you want an individualised support package? Do you want to dance your dance with your baby?

As your postnatal Doula I will visit you in your home and help as you adjust to life as a new parent (whether it is for your first child or subsequent children). I will undertake light housework, cook meals, look after your baby whilst you get your well earned rest or simply have a bath.

My aim is to promote the mother’s speedy recovery from the birth by being a caring and encouraging helper.

Drawing on the wisdom of experience, I can:

  • Provide mother to mother breastfeeding support
  • Help you to recognise and address your baby’s needs
  • Help you get enough sleep by looking after baby in your home while you rest
  • Shop for, prepare and serve you food, ensuring that everyone in the household is well fed
  • Pop a load in the washing machine, or dishwasher
  • Be a friend and a good listener

The postnatal package lasts 6 weeks.

Week 1: 5 visits
Week 2: 4 visits
Week 3: 3 visits
Week 4: 2 visits
Week 5: 1 visit
Week 6: 1 visit

Placenta Encapsulation

So much happens with and within a woman’s body as she goes through pregnancy and then childbirth.  It is a moment where all changes for her.  According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, it’s a time when she can make radical changes to her health. Sadly, the post-natal period is often a time when women don’t get the support they need, and new mums often feel that their health is rapidly declining, when it could be improving! One way to help prevent this is placenta encapsulation which can help to improve your health (as well as your baby’s) in both the short and long-term.

I have often wanted to ‘put my ladies to bed’ the way Chinese culture dictates, so that they can rest, allow their bodies to be restored and ultimately just spend those early days learning their babies.  This is something that, as a doula, I wish for them.  My role is to support these ladies and allow them to feel the extra nurturing that they might not get.  I am very sensitive to my ladies’ needs, and make a great effort to support them in their choices. As a doula, I have come across new mums who have struggled to produce enough milk, as well as those who have battled with the ‘baby blues’ and post-natal depression, so it makes me very happy that I’m able to offer a service to women that may help to prevent these problems from occurring in the first place.

“During a normal vaginal delivery a new mother will lose at least one eighth to one tenth of her body’s blood supply; with caesarean section births blood loss can be significantly more. Losing a large amount of iron so quickly can cause anemia, leaving a new mum feeling tired, faint and exhausted. The blood needs high supplies of iron to carry oxygen to the cells – low supplies of oxygen leave your cells starving and less able to heal after trauma. The placenta benefits the new mother by supplying incredibly rich iron, amino acids and essential fats which we believe to be the perfect replenishment following birth.

The most important nutrients found in rich supply in the placenta include:

1 Iron – essential for oxygen absorption in the cells
2 vitamins B6 – aids in the making of antibodies
3 Vitamin E – for healing damaged skin cells
4 Oxytocin hormone – essential for facilitating birth and breastfeeding
5 Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) – responsible for reducing stress levels
6 Cytokins – Fibroblasts that trigger cell metabolism healing and replacing damaged cells and tissue

The placenta benefits a healing mother after birth in many forms. Placenta smoothies (they only taste of fresh, organic fruits- I promise!), capsules, tinctures, essences, and homeopathic remedies can all be made using the placenta; each having their own benefit to the body and encouraging a quicker more natural recovery after birth.” (IPEN)

What do I need?

A clean tupperware container to put it in (around 2.5 litres is a good size) and a cool bag with ice blocks. If you give birth at home the tupperware container can be stored in your fridge, however, you should still have a cool bag and ice blocks as part of your hospital bag in case you transfer in.

If you’re having a smoothie, then you’ll need a blender for me to use.

I will provide you with an information sheet for your midwife/consultant, as well as a label for your container.

What happens once I give birth?

You would text/call me to let me know, and depending on the timing, I would come and pick it up from your home or hospital. My aim is to collect it within 24 hours of hearing from you and it is unusual for me not to be able to provide this level of service.

As I’m on call for births, I do ask people to avoid texting me between 11pm and 7.30am, as texts during those hours will wake me up and I’ll think that someone is in labour.

Smoothies are made in your home as hospitals don’t allow the use of untested electrical equipment such as blenders.

When the capsules are finished, I will text you to let you know, and mail them back to you via recorded next day delivery. If you live locally (Finsbury Park, Crouch End, Muswell Hill, East Finchley), then I’m happy to hand deliver the capsules at no extra cost to you.

Items such as the tincture and homeopathic remedy take longer to produce and are mailed separately at a later date.

Can you make the capsules in my home?

Yes I can, but only if the kitchen is suitable (clean, tidy, easy to sterilise), and if the cost of a taxi to and from your home is covered (I have two boxes of equipment). If you have pets or young children then the dehydrator will need to be placed in a room which is inaccessible to them.

Throughout the year, you can hear me speak at conferences all over the UK. I also offer specialist workshops: Abuela Doula Preparation Course, Loving the Multiple Mamas, Cultural Competency – please contact me for details.

Welcome Home Package

It seems as though you’ve been away for the longest time. It looks the same, but everything has changed. Your bed seems so inviting and you wish someone would pop the kettle on.

Do you want a warm smile and a reassuring voice to welcome you?

You are looking for some support but aren’t sure if you want a Postnatal doula.

If you want emotional and practical support at this time I will:

  • Meet you at home the day you leave hospital with your baby
  • If it is a homebirth I will arrive when you call
  • Help settle you in and unpack all the bits you took with you
  • Show you how to bath your baby
  • Support you in feeding your newborn
  • Cook you a delicious meal
  • Tuck you all up and leave you in blissful peace

I will be ‘on-call’ for you for 72 hours. That’s right. You can contact me at any time , day or night, with any concerns or worries you may have. If I am not able to advise you over the phone, I will come to your home. This can be so you can gain a few hours rest in the first few days or just chat over any concerns you may have. I love listening to birth stories, so feel free to share that as much as you like.

I believe that the first days should be about gazing lovingly at your baby and allowing yourself to rest.

Breastfeeding Support

So you’ve grown your baby and now it’s time to feed your baby.

I love food. I love red wine. I love the theatre. Birthdays, new clients, new ventures, I celebrate them all, and food plays a large part. I’m not hugely fussy when it comes to food. I’ll eat pretty much anything. (I don’t count my dislike of broccoli, cauliflower or brussel sprouts as fussy.)

Sometimes when we go out for a meal, we like to plan what we will eat in advance. We might check out the local menus, we might have a favourite something that we like to eat time and time again.

Feeding your baby is an important part of caring for him/her. You know that thoughts that you have about this and how you want to move forward.

So how can I help you? Let’s peruse the menu and see what’s on offer.

  • Pre natal breastfeeding sessions – let’s learn the basics. The golden hour, the first latch, positioning and attachment.
  • Post natal breastfeeding support – encouragement, support, troubleshooting. Ensuring the breastfeeding relationship starts well. Keeping an eye to how things are going. Spotting and dealing with any tricky bits.
  • Telephone support – for those moments you need a quick pick me up.

The proof, as they say, is in the pudding:

I have a special place in my heart for clients who:

• Love a good glass of red and a great meal
• Love to laugh and talk
• Love to sing and dance
• Love to look outside the box
• Love a good book
• Love the theatre

Take a look at my testimonials, see what people are saying about me, give me a call and let me know how I can support you.

I also run “Loving the Multiple Mama workshops around the country for doulas who want to learn more about supporting families who are expecting more than one.

If you need someone calm, thoughtful and caring to support you and your partner to go through a massive life changing event then Mars is someone you should consider.
